I think it’d really be cliche to repeat something that’s been circulating for the past idk decade(?) or so, but like any 90s brunch-centric baby who’s entire existence is documented and let’s not forget filtered on the web, I’ma say it anyway: sleep is for the weak(which is another way of saying I spent the night completely plastered on the dance floor. Shoutout to KL’s “lit” nightlife). But if we’re being true to ourselves, it is 2018 so facts have no place in our society. HAH!
There’s little else aside from the sweet sensations of brunch, knocking you back to your senses the day after, that’ll serve as an adequate peace offering for the night’s sinful retreat. Here are 8 brunch places in KL to write home about(or text? C’mon guys, we’re all cultured here).
1. The World Is Flat @ Publika
A true testament to the “think outside the box” approach, The World Is Flat is tale of a brunch establishment gone awry – in the best, imaginable way possible. Breaking the mold of what a pizza should look and taste like – to the massive uprising of New Yorkers all around – its pizza finds comforts in its inconsistencies, beautifully splayed canvases of doughy goodness – not unlike a prepubescent teenager in the throes of struggling to find his/her identity only to find out that their uniqueness lies in shunning conformity in favor of taking the beaten path. If you’re looking for the typical cheese and dough makeup that’s taking prime real estate in the minds of pizza-goers the city over, you’d best opt out now. Otherwise, keep your senses in check as the cheesy drama unfolds. Melodramatic much? I’ll let you decide for yourself.
*The Fat Samurai | Chicago Deep Dish*
Their sandwiches rake in considerably heft as a true equal as its pizza counterpart. Try your hand at their Pastrami Melt(house cured beef pastrami, burnt onions, mushroom tempe, spiced Russian dressing, honey butter and doused in 3 types of cheeses) and definitely for the sake of FOMO, take their Salted Egg Fried Chicken sandwich for a spin.

2. Mechanic Cafe @ Cheras
At the feverish pace at which technology stands to consume us in every facet of our lives, with little indication – or appetite – of slowing down anytime soon, there’s this biological imperative to steal pockets of stillness – if only to maintain our sanity. As much as I’d like to stay a consensual captive to the whims of my next phone notification, it’s always liberating to peel back on this techno-savvy world and regress into the world of simplicity. If Uniqlo has a place in minimalistic fashion, why not a cafe that practices what it preaches. And what it preaches ain’t some kumbaya sitting around in a meditative state. Instead, you’re encourage to just chill. Let its brunch specials heal the scars of an Instagram post that deserved more likes than it garnered. I feel you.

3. Three Journey Cafe @ Cheras Traders Square
When Friday night rolls around and clubs are packed to the brim with Tinder-swiping fanatics looking to partake in the real deal, is it any wonder that all-day brunch places are becoming a true staple for the weekend. The perfect time waking up at noon or thereafter is a telltale sign that your suave because the night before, you were knee deep in casual conversations with friends and strangers alike. Besides, its the weekend. Sleep in. You deserve it. But when you come around and noon inches dangerously close to evening, Three Journey got your brunch covered.
*Atlantic | French Toast*
As an aside, their open-face burgers stands the test of well…being pretty damn photogenic and probably delicious – if you’re into that sort of thing. Cap off your brunch journey with the much-touted Green Tea Charcoal Chiffon Cake.

4. Foremula Cafe @ Petaling Jaya
If there’s anything easier and way more satisfying than taking candy from a baby without so much as a trickle of remorse, it’s taking a pun and milking it to damnation and beyond. How so you might ask? There’s most certainly a foremula for that…L-O-L. This establishment was conceived entirely on the premise that there’s a, wait for it…foremula for enjoying a cup of coffee, preferably sidled up to the wholesomely intimate brunch offerings at the ready.
The only thing better than dreaming up the next bright idea on an empty gut is having that void filled with their signature Butter Me Up, Chick(Boneless chicken thigh with seasoned flour batter, deep-fried till crispy and topped with a creamy curried buttermilk sauce, accompanied by sweet potato fries and salad). Better yet, make it a double with a classic French Toast. When in doubt, there’s always a foremula for it. And scene…

5. Amore Espresso Bar @ TTDI
At the height of where my “enthusiasm” for the opposite sex began and my courage to tell them ends(pretty darn low), passing a note to a friend of a friend to pass it to my crush was the optimal way of confessing my feelings. So if you’re operating in this gray area of dropping subtle hints, what better way to break the news to a friend – hopefully turned significant other – by taking him/her to a cafe with a giant “I GOT A CRUSH ON YOU” neon sign. It’s a low hanging fruit and boyyy, is it the ripe time to cash in.
As you’re sweating profusely hoping the person sitting opposite you takes the hint, keep your hands busy, in a constant state of motion – so as not to appear fidgety – by indulging in a sumptuous Japanese rice bowl or if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, the Nasi Lemak Croissant. To round out the whole shebang with the move that ends all moves: hand her/him a Latte Softserve, say “you’re super hot cause you’re making this melt”(*or whatever dessert line you can muster up). Guaranteed to work(Not really…)
*Bryan | Lavendar Mocktail*
*Japanese Rice Bowl | Nasi Lemak Rendang*
Address: 24A, Jalan Datuk Sulaiman, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, 60000 Kuala Lumpur
Contact: 03-7732 6138
6. Eat X Dignity @ Sentul
It’s not every day an establishment earmarks its earning for underprivileged children. It’s also not everyday a massive coffee chain charges you a high premium for your name on a cup(cough, cough, Star*****) but we’re all the better for it. Eat X Dignity reads like a true underdog story on a two-pronged mission: churning out comfort brunch meals, all the while heeding to the desperate calls of the less fortunate.
*Rice Set | Signature Crunch*
*Thai Green Curry Pasta | Prawn Mee*
Address: 25-G, Jalan 11/48a, Sentul Raya Boulevard, 51000 Kuala Lumpur
Contact: 03-4050 3387
7. Podgy @ Bangsar
The revival of Podgy means the triumphant return of all things minimalistic, sleek and totally simplistic to the point of achieving a nirvana of complete stillness. Among the booms, pows and hurrahs of KL’s torrid cityscape, expect Podgy to be a calming oasis, where unrest go to die and calm(trees) rise anew.
Congrats on wazing your way into this humble abode. To achieve a heightened state of complete and utter “chill”, refer to the brunch manual. Hint: brunch is whatever you want it to be.
*Spaghetti | Avo Toast*
*Classic Beef Burger|Waffles w/ fresh fruit & maple syrup*
Address: 5, Lorong Kurau, Lucky Garden, 59100 Kuala Lumpur
Contact: 012-619 0841
8. Skive @ Bangsar
Come Monday morning and you’ll be wishing it was Friday night. Come Friday night and you’ll be wishing it was Saturday afternoon. Why? Skive has got all the hype of a Bruno Mars song without the in-your-faceness(?) of a certain royal wedding nobodies tuning in to watch. Which is a really roundabout way of saying “I’m really freaking excited” to dig into its fusion brunch offerings.
The glorious fusion fare has its every which way with whatever creative juices it was channeling at the time. Don’t believe me? See for yourself. Voila.
*Ayam Berempah | Big Mexican Brunchfast*
